As part of Read Yourself Happy’s America…In Books feature, here are some of the best books set in Alaska.

The Simple Wild by K.A. Tucker

The Simple Wild

This new adult romance novel takes place in a very rural town in Alaska, and a hate-to-love romance between a pilot and a city girl. I loved this book, even as a reader who doesn’t normally read a lot of romance. Here’s my full review of this novel!

Two Old Women: An Alaska Legend of Betrayal, Courage, and Survival by Velma Wallis

Velma Wallis’ historical fiction novel is based on an Athabascan Indian legend in Alaska. It tells the story of two women abandoned by their tribe during a famine.

Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer

I’ll be honest with this one – I didn’t love this book and rated it two stars. However, I’m including it on the list because it is a generally well-liked book, and it shows how brutal the wilds of Alaska can be. Especially if you’re an ill-prepared rich college kid.

The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah

The Great Alone is another historical fiction novel, taking place in 1974. A man comes home from Vietnam a changed man and moves his family to Alaska.

Travels in Alaska by John Muir

29608072

If you don’t know who John Muir is, he was an early conservationist and writer. This non-fiction book is a memoir of his time spent in Alaska.

Flight of the Goose: A Story of the Far North by Lesley Thomas

This is a book that I hadn’t heard of prior to doing research for this list, but it sounds fascinating. According to the Goodreads/publisher synopsis, it’s a “novel about an indigenous woman shaman, a draft-dodging bird scientist, and a young Inupiaq hunter caught between traditions.”

Alaska by James A. Michener

I bet you can’t tell what this book is about. Alaska is a historical fiction set during frontier times and is about a group of people struggling to survive.

Braving It: A Father, a Daughter, and an Unforgettable Journey into the Alaskan Wild by James Campbell

Braving It is a memoir about a father and daughter trekking through the Alaskan wilds.

Coming into the Country by John McPhee

This non-fiction book is all about Alaska, from the rural areas to the cities. It’s a travel memoir, so if you want a truly realistic look at Alaska, check this one out.
