I’ve been looking for a Read-a-Thon to participate in, and this one sounded perfect.
The Reading Rush was previously called Booktube-a-Thon. This year, it’s got a new name and even a fancy new website where you can sign up and interact with other people participating. If you’re participating, here’s my profile if you would like to add me and follow my progress.
Here are this year’s challenges, and the books I will be reading:
Read a Book with Purple on the Cover
Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
This was my July Book of the Month pick, and it was the first book I thought of for this challenge. The cover is gorgeous (ss there anything better than purple and teal together? I doubt it.) and I’ve never read a book inspired by Mexican folklore. The novel is of medium length, coming in at 334 pages, so it shouldn’t take me long. This book is actually being released this upcoming Tuesday, July 23rd, so I’m also excited about reading a new release!
psst – If you would like to try out Book of the Month, a monthly subscription service that allows you to choose up to three books to be delivered, here’s my referral link!
Read an Entire Book in the Same Spot
All Systems Red: The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells
I’ve had this book downloaded to my Kindle for far too long without reading it. For the past couple of months, I haven’t been in a mood for science fiction, which is frustrating for me because it’s been one of my favorite genres since I was a child. This novella is just under 150 pages, so I’ll be able to finish it in just a couple of hours, which makes it perfect for a readathon. I’m hoping that reading this novella, which I’ve heard nothing but great things about, will pull me out of my sci-fi slump and inspire me to get back into that genre.
Read a Book You Meant to Read Last Year
Vicious by V.E. Schwab
I really enjoy V.E. Schwab’s writing, so I have absolutely no idea why I haven’t read this duology yet. I purchased both books at the end of last year, and they’ve sat on my shelf ever since. I believe this is the longest book I’ll be reading during The Reading Rush, coming it at a little over 350 pages.
Read an Author’s First Book
This Monstrous Thing by Mackenzi Lee
I adored Mackenzi Lee’s The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue and The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy, so when I saw this book on sale for cheap on Book Outlet I bought it. This is a Frankenstein retelling.
Read a Book with a Non-Human Main Character
The Last Wish: Introducing the Witcher by Andrzej Sapkowski
I might be cheating a wee-bit with this one. Maybe? The main character of The Witcher series is Geralt, who was born a human but has had experiments done on him to turn him into a witcher. Witchers have heightened senses, can make use of some magic, and has abilities that humans do not. So I’m counting it. With the trailer for the Netflix adaptation being released this week (and being amazing), I want to get to this entire series before the end of the year.
Read a Book with Five or More Words in the Title
The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman
This will be the second read-through of this short novel for me. I loved this book the first time I read it in 2016, and I’m looking forward to enjoying it again. This novel is very short at less than 200 pages, so it’ll take me no time at all to read.
Read a Book and Watch the Film Adaptation
Misery by Stephan King
This challenge was the hardest for me to choose a book for. I rarely watch movies because I have a terrible attention span when it comes to watching anything on a screen (unless it’s Star Trek, of course!). I ended up choosing Misery because it’s always been my favorite Stephen King film adaptation, but I’ve never read the book. I’m hoping the book is even better than the film.
Best of luck with the readathon! You have some great choices here 🙂 I need to read All Systems Red too!

I just found this readathon today – lol.
And I just finished All Systems Red this week – it was REALLY GOOD!! I have a NEIL GAIMAN book on my readathon list too – STARDUST. And I have the same purple cover book as you do – lol.
BTW can’t wait to watch THE WITCHER – I might read the book too, just because. 😀
