My March TBR

March is going to be a bit of a busy month. My birthday and a corresponding trip to Washington D.C. falls about half-way through the month, I’m participating in the Re-Read-a-Thon, and I want to spend more time working on some personal goals and projects.

I also want to have a great reading month. I’m aware that this list (plus the re-read-a-thon list) are a bit ambitious for a 31-day TBR, but several of these selections are graphic novels and comics, and those don’t take me long to read. Let’s get right into it.

So that I’m not repeating myself, here are the six books I’m reading for the re-read-thon.

Dune by Frank Herbert

All the way back when I was in high school, I attempted to read a mass-market paperback copy of Dune and ended up setting it aside unfinished the next day. I don’t remember exactly why the book didn’t click with me, but that was over a decade ago, and I never picked it up again.

This month, with the news that Dune is getting a cinematic reboot, I thought it would be the perfect time to finally give this science fiction classic another shot. I want to like it. I generally adore science fiction, and I feel a bit ashamed that I haven’t added this to the list of books I’ve read yet.

Doctor Strange: The Fate of Dreams by Devin Grayson

This is a novelization of a Doctor Strange story that I’m currently finishing. Doctor Strange has been my favorite superhero since I took the plunge into comic books after meeting my boyfriend, and I had no idea Marvel had turned some of their stories into novels until I saw it at Trilogy Comics this past Saturday.

I’m currently enjoying it, and a review will be coming later this week.

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

I just purchased Leigh Bardugo’s King of Scars and the entire Grishaverse trilogy because I adored the Six of Crows duology. I want to read the Grishaverse trilogy before diving into King of Scars, so I’m starting off with Shadow and Bone. I was so enchanted with the magic in Six of Crows so I’m really looking forward to a deeper look.

Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson

Considering that this novel is 1087 pages, my main goal for March is to finish at least half of it. It’s huge, and it took me a solid week to read The Way of Kings

The Way of Kings was the first Brandon Sanderson novel I read and he became an insta-buy author for me. I picked up Skyward and Words of Radiance immediately after finishing it. I’m eager to see what happens next, and I’m so excited that this is going to be a ten-book series.

Beowulf translated by Burton Raffel

According to what I’ve heard, most people read Beowulf in school, but I never did as far as I can remember. I saw this version at Goodwill and picked it up for a dollar, so now is as good a time as ever to read it. Plus, I want to read it before the next book on this list…

The Boneless Mercies by April Genevieve Tucholke

I saw this book at the library where it was described as a gender-bent retelling of Beowulf. I love both retellings and gender-bent novels, so obviously I grabbed it. I’ll be reading this right after Beowulf.

48 Hours by William R Forstchen

39863280

I was sent a review copy of this apocalyptic novel by Tor.com publishing. I love anything with worldwide disasters and impending doom, so I’m looking forward to reading this novel about our sun releasing a huge solar explosion headed towards Earth.

The Tea Dragon Society by Katie O’Neill

While I know nothing about this graphic novel, it looks so cute that I was intrigued as soon as I pulled it out of my February OwlCrate box! The artwork is colorful and adorable.

Fence Volume One by C.S. Pacat

I purchased volume one of this comic book series when it was on sale on Amazon for something like $4. I don’t know much about it, except that it’s about a fencing team, which honestly was enough for me to buy it. I fenced for a little while in college and wish I had kept with it longer.

X-23: Family Album by Mariko Tamaki

Several months ago I had to take a break from buying comic books for financial reasons. Well, it was actually because I have no self-control and every time I went into the comic book store I’d drop $100 and I was broke. Now that we’re a little bit better off financially, I’m slowly making my way back into comic book buying, and there’s a few series I’ve been missing. This is one of them. X-23 has become one of my favorite modern Marvel characters, and I’m interested to see why they take her in this series.

Doctor Strange: A Separate Reality by Steve Englehart

When I saw this collection at my comic book store, I grabbed it pretty much instantly. I’ve never heard of this arc before, but it’s from the ’70s and I’ll give anything with Doctor Strange as the main character a shot.

  1. Looking forward to your thoughts on Dune. For me it ranks as one of the most incredible feats of literary imagination of the 20th Century. It gives me a headache when I try to figure out how Frank Herbert did it. Not everyone’s cup of tea, though.

    Happy Birthday for March!
