October Wrap-Up

Here’s a quick run-down of Read Yourself Happy during the month of October.

Books

Here is the list of books I finished in October. Some of the books at the top of the list I actually started in September but finished in October.

• Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi – Probably the best book I finished in October, although the brunt of the story I read in September. It’s one of the most compelling stories I’ve read in years, and I finished the story actually needing the next book (which is out in March 2019, and I don’t know how I’m going to wait that long!).
• Tales from the Warming by Lorin R. Robinson – A collection of short stories taking place in the near future when humanity is dealing with the consequences of climate change.
• The Witches by Roald Dahl – Dahl’s classic story about witches that want to destroy all children.
• The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzi Lee – This is the sequel to Lee’s The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, and just as amazing.
• Bunnicula by James & Deborah Howe – The classic Halloween children’s story.
• Good Night, Kitty Kitty by Brenda Ponnay – A cute children’s book about a misbehaving cat.
• Muddy: The Raccoon Who Stole Dishes by Griffin Ondaatje – A children’s book with adorable art about a raccoon that wishes to eat leftovers.
• A Hell of an Innocent by Zidrou – A graphic novel noir about family that takes place in Australia. Particularly beautiful art.
• Daisy’s Run by Scott Baron – Book one of a five-part series about a group of people on a spaceship and what it means to be human.
• An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir – The first book in an incredible young adult fantasy trilogy inspired by Ancient Rome.
• Doctor Strange: The Oath by Brian K. Vaughan – A fun story arc featuring Marvel’s Doctor Strange and his most-trusted friend Wong.
• Werewolves Don’t Run for President by Debbie Dadey – One of the numerous Bailey School Kids books. My boyfriend loved these books growing up but I had never heard of them, so I found a couple at our local library. There will be a review up sometime next week.
• Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl – One of my favorite Roald Dahl books, and the story that the Wes Anderson film is based on.
• Battlestar Suburbia by Chris McCrudden – A hilarious book about humans fighting back against their robot overlords.
• Speak: The Graphic Novel by Laurie Halse Anderson – A heart-wrenching graphic novel version of the controversial novel. It was difficult to read, as it deals with rape, but well worth it. I’ll be posting a review of this sometime this weekend.
• Book Love by Debbie Tung – A graphic novel about loving books.
• A Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir – The second book in the An Ember in the Ashes trilogy, and just as excellent as the first. I’ll be uploading a review of this book tomorrow.

On the Blog

I had a chance to post a lot of non-book review posts as well.

• 10 Fun Adult Coloring Books – Coloring is a great way to de-stress, and adults shouldn’t let the kids have all the fun.
• Down the TBR Hole #2 – Where I attempt to reduce my massive TBR list and fail at doing so.
• How to Read Great Books Without Spending Your Entire Paycheck – Books are expensive but there’s no reason that reading needs to be.
• Chloe: Friday Favorites &  Becca: Friday Favorites – Great ladies answering questions about their bookish habits and favorite books.
• 5 Books to Read on Indigenous Peoples’ Day – There’s no need to celebrate Columbus Day anymore because Indigenous Peoples’ Day is more important.
• Why You Should Shop for Books at Thrift Stores – A trip to Goodwill where I spent $20 and got a crazy bunch of books.

Personal

October was a very busy month, and because of that my boyfriend and I didn’t get to do a few of the things we had planned, such as a trip to an amusement park and celebrating Halloween (neither of us could take off work).

I’m thrilled with the growth of Read Yourself Happy, and am so grateful for all of your kind words, donations, comments, and likes! The blog now has a little over 400 readers, which I still cannot wrap my head around. It’s growing much faster than I had anticipated. Creating new posts for you guys has become one of my favorite ways to relax and unload all my thoughts about books, so again, thank you!!
